Puffco Peak Preview : Interesting Dab Rig But Expensive
The Puffco Peak is being eagerly awaited by many, so as the release date gets closer, we wanted to share what we know so far! This “first-ever smart rig” as claimed by the website, costs a whopping $379.99! So, what is all the fuss about? And is it worth the sky-high price?
UPDATE 4/18/2019: Puffco is now facing a lawsuit over the Peak dab rig.
Puffco, creators of the Puffco Plus and the Puffco Pro 2 have now gone a completely different way with the Peak. This device consists of two main parts, the glass and the base. It’s essentially a large portable e-nail, in a new shape. Weighing just over a pound, the Puffco Peak stands at 7 inches tall, with a base 2.75 inches wide.
What’s Included?
- Puffco Peak Device
- Loading tool
- Cleaning swabs
- USB cable & ‘supercharger’
- Extra ceramic bowl & carb cap
- Carrying case
Features of The Puffco Peak
- 4 heat settings
- 20 second heat up time
- 2 hour charge time
- LED light band
- Haptic feedback
- Sesh-Mode Functionality
- Intelligent temperature calibration
The Peak battery can charge in two hours and last for up to 30 dabs. As this device is intended to be passed around and shared, the new “sesh-mode” function allows you to extend your vaping session. Average heat-up time for the Peak is 20 seconds, which is great in comparison to a typical dab rig. But does it stack up to other similar, cheaper products? As we’re yet to try it for ourselves, this information will be updated after we get to try one!
The Puffco Peak has four heat settings: Blue = 450°F / Green = 500°F / Orange = 550°F / White = 600°F.
The more wax you intend to load, the higher your setting should be. The Peak’s “Intelligent Temperature Calibration” feature consists of smart-ware which can automatically adjust the heat time on your device. This is meant to be useful during repeat use and sesh-mode. The light band around the Peak is designed to signal heat cycle and battery information, so you can dab at the correct time.
Comparison, Puffco Peak vs. Dr. Dabber Boost Black Edition
The Puffco Peak comes with an extra ceramic bowl, which is good. But, the fact that the options are limited to only ceramic, and only two atomizers are included, feels like a letdown when you’re paying almost $400! As this is an investment, let’s hope the ceramic is good, and lasts a long time too. Personally, I prefer hitting on quartz as it seems to produce the best flavor without the wax sticking to the sides.
Take the Dr. Dabber Boost Black Edition for example. This portable e-nail (which also doesn’t require a blow torch..) has the 3 standard nail types, including titanium, ceramic, and quartz. At $159.95, this alternative has three atomizers AND a replaceable battery, for half the price.
How To Use The Puffco Peak
From what we know, the way to use your Puffco Peak is pretty simple. First, fully charge your device. The light will turn off when it’s finished charging. Then fill the glass piece with water (just over the air-holes) and push it on to attach to the base of the device. Hold the power button down for three seconds to unlock the Peak, and a single click will cycle through the four heat settings. The bigger the wax load, the hotter your setting should be (e.g. Large loads – white setting, low-temp or small dabs – blue setting, etc.)
Pick your preferred heat setting and load the ceramic bowl with wax of your choice. When ready, cover the top of the atomizer with the included carb cap. Double click the button to start the 20 second heat-up cycle. The Peak will vibrate and the lights will flash when it’s ready for use.
When ready, just inhale from the mouthpiece and enjoy the vapor until the heat runs out. Hold down the power button to stop the heat at any time.
Portability and Discretion
One thing that stands out is the impressive look of this new product. The look is new and exciting, and it comes with a case, but could you really use this in public? The Puffco Peak is great for sharing, but this is anything but discreet. The large glass piece, flashing light band and thick base make it impossible to be stealthy with this thing. I’d say, it looks great for house parties, but good luck sneaking it into a music festival or any other public event.
Final Thoughts On The Peak eRig
To be honest, my main thought is that for $379.99 (around the price of the infamous Volcano vaporizer) – this thing better give me the best dab of my life. Every day. Forever.
The unusual shape and design of the Puffco Peak may be a selling point, at first. However, the fact that it’s not interchangeable at all worries me slightly. In a time of constant change and development, is it worth investing so much in one product without any variation?
It’s simple, the high price point fills me with high expectations. Let’s hope the Puffco Peak lives up to them! If you want one you can reserve it here.
